What do we assess in this service?
Who needs EU registration?
Citizens of EU Member States, Liechtenstein and Switzerland who stay in Finland for more than three months at a time must register their right of residence with Migri. Nordic citizens follow a different route and register their personal data with DVV instead of applying for EU registration with Migri.
Possible grounds
- Employment
- Self-employment
- Studies
- Family relationship to an EU citizen
- Sufficient financial resources when another specific ground does not apply
Registration is not a fixed-term residence permit
Once granted, EU registration is valid until further notice and is not extended like a residence permit. After five years of continuous legal residence, an EU citizen may acquire a permanent right of residence if the legal conditions are met.
Non-EU family members
A non-EU family member of an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen who will stay in Finland for more than three months generally applies for a residence card of a family member of an EU citizen. The application is submitted in Finland and the EU family member must also be residing in Finland and continue to meet the applicable free-movement conditions.
